Bee Keeping for Beginners at Bulleen Arts & Gardens
Bee Keeping is the ancient art of caring for bees as they capture the essence of flowers as honey. If you’re thinking of joining the ranks and doing your part to improve the lives of these magnificent and indispensable insects , this class will help you understand the decisions needed before you start, and the amount of work involved.
Karen Sutherland, of Edible Eden Design, has been keeping bees for a few years now, and has experience in top bar and the more commonly used Langstroth box methods, and can also give some insight into using Flow Hives. Currently Karen and her partner keep one Langstroth hive on their garage roof, and harvest around 50 kg honey per year.
Karen also has more than 25 years’ experience designing, planting and maintaining gardens, with a special emphasis on bushfoods, edible and sustainable gardens. She grew up gardening, amongst a family of gardeners and farmers, and continues this family tradition, enthusiastically helping others to live this choice of home produce-growing. Karen also uses current technologies that are sustainable and beneficial to the environment, always seeking to benefit the garden site and the people and creatures that rely on it. Karen is qualified in both horticulture and permaculture.
