Cultivation notes

Perennial with lush green foliage 60 cm – 1 m high. In warm climates plants flourish in light shade. In cold climates grow in a black plastic pot in a sunny position or in a greenhouse. Feed and water regularly. Plants sprout in spring and die back in late autumn. Harvest then, as rhizomes can rot in cold wet winters. Lift and store in damp sand until weather warms. If you’re lucky, your plant may flower in summer.

Uses

The rhizomes can be harvested in autumn when the leaves die down and used fresh in smoothies, turmeric lattes, soups or curries. The aromatic leaves can be used to flavour dishes or to wrap food in for cooking. The petals and bracts of the flowers can be added to salads or cooked with rice. Turmeric contains curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory.
