Today we are picking bunches of the delicious red variety of the Strawberry Grape (Vitis Fragola). The fragrant round fruit has a more complex flavor than the strawberries it is named after. It is not a bland taste like some disappointing shop bought grapes. It is a backyard Italian variety of grape, which is not commercially available.
This grape is a trouble free vine growing to around 5m. The harvest is fantastic, especially considering the difficulties that other grape vines in Melbourne have had with mildew this year. The netting is vital to protect the bunches of grapes from birds, possums and rats.
Hello,
I live in Australia, and have been looking for a strawberry grape vine, do you happen to sell any plants at all or know where I can purchase from?
Thank you
Hi Tristan,
I will have some red strawberry grape vines for sale at my pop-up nursery: 2-4 pm Sunday 17 November in Pascoe Vale South https://edibleeden.com.au/events/spring-plant-sale/

Hello again, I only just read this comment sorry, is there any chance you might post me a cutting ? If you could email me that would be awesome! Thank you
Hi Tristan, I’m sorry it’s not possible, keep an eye out for any pop up nursery sales in the next year. Cheers
hi There,
a friend gave me a few plants of white fragola and black fragola. I am stuggling to find information on the white fragola online….is this a true fragola?
Hi Ben,
Yes as far as I know, but the white strawberry grape doesn’t have the same flavour as the red strawberry grape, just a very good flavour and true disease resistance.
Cheers Karen
PleaseKAREN. let me now if I can by vitis fragola 2 box Please call joe 0419 687868. Thanks
Hi Joe, There will be some vitis fragola vines for sale next spring.
I brought a couple of these from your open garden and planted them last winter. They have grown well and I have been looking up how to prune them. Should they be spur or cane pruned? Thanks.
I have always cane pruned mine with great success, but apparently they can also be spur pruned. For the first couple of years the pruning is really structural, not so much for encouragement of fruit.
Are you training the vines up a pole, or onto a structure? If so train (tie with soft ties) the longest cane up the support and only prune it back lightly by 2 or 3 nodes. Prune any other canes or growth back to 2 to 3 nodes long from the main stem, so as to reduce competition with the main cane. Don’t remove this smaller growth completely in the first year or so, as the extra photosynthesis from this growth will help the plants overall development greatly. As your plant takes shape over the next 2 to 3 years, you can begin cane or spur pruning from the main stem. Hope this helps, let me know if you need more advice. Cheers Karen
Thanks for the tips. I’m growing them along the fence, with lattice attached to it so I was planning on choosing two main canes going in opposite directions.
Are these strawberry grapes seedless?
Thanks
Hi Francis,
The strawberry grapes do have seeds inside.
Cheers
Karen
Hi Karen! I attended one of your gunyah classes earlier this year and was one of the many students who were interested in purchasing a grape seedling. I think you mentioned that they would be sold at your annual event later this year. My question is, given the current circumstances, whether you are still selling and whether posting the seedling would be an option? I live +5km from your area. Thank you, and have a lovely day 🙂
I’m sorry Lulu at this stage of the COVID restrictions we’re not able to do this. Hopefully when restrictions ease it will be possible.
